The "Man vs. Food" legend stopped by the store with his crew earlier today to check out all the latest gear to be had. Adam was super nice and very complimentary of our selection. Some of his guys picked up some AG Jeans and Penguin shorts to rock around town this weekend. Keep an eye out for Adam and his team as they hunt down the best chow in Portsmouth. Local musician and fast eddie's dirty laundry favorite BCap has ventured into a new realm of creative development with his latest project. Melding the mediums of music, visual arts and technology, "Cap" is reaching to new heights. We don't want to spoil the show, but here's a small clip of a recent rehearsal at an undisclosed location. The official unveiling will be held on May 21st at Foobar in Portsmouth at a show headlined by Sleep Wonder of Thievery Corporation. Doors are at 7pm, and Cap will take the stage at 9pm. Roy Slaper makes some incredible jeans, that's a well known fact among denim geeks. But...it's how easy he makes it look that really inspires. Considering every inch and stitch is hand cut and placed, down to the embossing on the leather hip patch, you can see why these jeans are revered. Check out the video below to watch this master of denim "whip" together a pair of raw denim jeans. He's like some kind of freak, but in a good way. We'd love to see it all go down live and in person. While we don't carry ROY jeans, we have mad respect for this guy's skills. He's certainly has the love. Keep on keepin' on Roy!!!

Who knew Penguins loved warm weather???? Our friends at the Original Penguin brand have launched a new video highlighting their Spring and Summer 2011 collections. Many of the styles, including swimwear, seen in the clip are or will be available at fast eddie's dirty laundry over the coming months. We are excited at how well the new collection has been received thus far. A lot of of the styles in this season's assortment take on that "Classic Penguin" look, but still have a very contemporary feel to them. Some call outs are the slub tees and board shorts. ...wellllll....maybe he wasn't quite at the decks in Portsmouth, but he sure looks like he was in this photo taken over the weekend. Seen here sporting a pair of AG Jeans, Ryan looks like he went about thirteen rounds with the Old Ferry Landing's infamous Jimmy Juice. While we certainly appreciate his choice in denim (we're guessing the AG Protege in a charcoal wash), the team here at fast eddie's dirty laundry would like to advise Mr. Phillipe to be on the look out for either those sneaky bartenders or the paparazzi. The two simply don't mix. If you want a similar look to Ryan's --sans the alcohol induced puffy face-- stop by the store and check out AG Jeans denim for yourself. While you're at it, stop by the Old Ferry Landing as well. We hear they are opening up in the coming days!

Local favorite, Eric Bradley, pours good times at Poco's Deck which is set to reopen today for the summer season.

While summer isn't quite here yet, it appears we are on the "brink" of the first big social weekend of the season here in Portsmouth. Rumor has it that Eric Bradley and the rest of the Poco's Deck Squad spent the day yesterday prepping the bar for what is certain to be a boon-doggle of epic proportions. The weather report is calling for temperatures in and around the 60's with the only potential blip being a few showers on Sunday. Our assumption is that others decks will be open as well, ushering in the next round of summer debauchery on the Seacoast. We'll be doing our best to keep the "Dirty Laundry Basket" filled with all the local happenings. In addition, we'll have our stealth photographer on the prowl over the coming months to capture some candid moments on the local scene. Stay tuned, everyone....shaping up to be a good one! "Vinny Chase" to Attend NH Film Festival

Ok, ok...so it's Adrian Grenier who plays Vincent Chase in HBO's wildly popular series Entourage. None the less, Adrian will be on hand tomorrow to share his documentary Teenage Paparazzo which was also a 2010 Sundance Film Festival Selection. Not too shabby for the folks at NH Film Festival. Going on 10 years strong, it is clear that this annual event is becoming more and more significant with each passing year. Should be another fantastic weekend of film and celebration, so pick up your tickets if you can and keep your eyes peeled...you never know who may be grabbing a coffee at BNG in the coming days. Of course, we also welcome all celebs to swing on by fast eddie's dirty laundry and pick up some of the latest gear from any of our fall collections. Recently, Denim News posted a great clip about an emergent denim brand from North Carolina called Raleigh Denim. The company was literally started by a young couple making super-premium jeans in their apartment. The product was so good that Barney's NY jumped on it. While the jeans themselves are $300+, constructed of raw denim and super tough to come by, the video above gives you a good sense of just how much thought and effort goes into making any special pair of jeans. We think that Raleigh's to local sourcing is also inspiring in these economic times. Maybe we'll be fortunate to carry Raleigh Denim someday. It's that time of year again...the 8th ranked 'Cats take to the ice for the first time this season, visiting third ranked Miami-Ohio for a pair of games, the first of three consecutive games against CCHA teams. UNH will be back in Durham to face Michigan next weekend. Be sure to catch tonight's game broadcast live on national television via CBS College Sports at 7:30 PM, channel #261 on Comcast here in Portsmouth. Lots of returning upper-classmen gives this year's squad a real shot to extend their nation's second-best NCAA tournament appearance streak. Let's make it 10 years in in a row. Go 'Cats!

Recently, Ben Sherman pulled off a guerrilla marketing stunt at their NY store in Soho. After merchandising the interior with a plethora of shirts in the windows, they started hanging a few outside as well. They secretly filmed the results, and clearly NY'ers are unabashed about helping themselves to a "five finger discount". What's great is how blatant some folks are...not even attempting to be subtle in their actions. The Raw Denim Effect

Raw denim has been a passion of many for sometime, but is becoming increasingly popular as more and more people discover the experience of "wearing in" a pair of jeans from scratch. It takes time (the shots above are of the same pair from day 1, 6 months and 22 months) and determination.

True purists will avoid washing the jeans as little as possible (the pair above was only washed twice), but that requires a special tolerance that not everyone can achieve.

While we only have raw denim at Fast Eddie's Dirty Laundry from time to time, this story provides great insight into the practice and gives some helpful hints...like avoiding white couches at the outset!

Wow. This is really disconcerting. The FAA has recently given approval on the first, real flying car. While ultimately very cool, it is a little scary to think that tourists from various locations will be descending (quite literally) on Market Square. Being downtown all day, we get to see some of the most inept displays of vehicle operation one could possibly imagine.

You think backing into a light post is bad? How about getting hung up on the North Church Steeple? About the only good thing about this, that we were able to think of, would be the greater ease with which you could navigate all the downtown one-ways. Although, you have to ask, does this mean you get to zip over the EZ-Pass lanes on 95?

The Flush: Funk & Fashion crew is taking over the Wet Bar (downstairs at The Page on Vaughn Mall) every Wednesday night this summer, and it's definitely gonna be a scene.

The will be DJ sets, live music, special guests and serious drink specials from New England based companies Hammer & Sickle Vodka, Peak Organic Brewing & Cabin Fever Spirits. There will also be weekly restaurant giveaways from Taste of the Seacoast.

Flush will also be featuring the work of a local photographer or artist each week on the flatscreens. Come down tonight to check out the work of Erik Ralston.

Tall Ships Arriving Tomorrow...

Kick off the Memorial Day Weekend with the Parade of Ships in Portsmouth Harbor tomorrow at 1 PM. The HMS Bounty and The Lynx will be mooring at the Commercial Fishing Pier at Prescott Park for the weekend. Should be an amazing sight as the ships tie up just as they would have 100+ years ago, in the heart of the historic South End. The ships will be open for viewings for most of the weekend.

They told us it was going to get messy this week. We had no idea.

The guys from Bourassa Construction and Santorelli Construction deserve a lot of credit though. They are working double time to have Market Street all wrapped up for Market Square Day. All new period street lighting, new brick sidewalks, and plenty of drainage to keep the walkway passable in the winter months.

It may look like a war zone now, but we're looking forward to the new Market Street in what should be pretty short order.

Of course, we'll be open through it all...with lots of new spring styles arriving daily. Come by and check out the progress!

Not having posted anything denim related in a bit, we wanted to find something new and interesting to share with everyone that had some relation to fast eddie's dirty laundry.

Well...check out The Rugged Standard. This cool new store in York, England boasts some really high-end denim, but even cooler is the merchandising concept. The space has been set up like a "flat", as they say in Europe. The clothes are displayed accordingly, bringing a real-life feel to the shopping experience. One question we have, though...how many guys that you know have such pristine living quarters?

Starbucks Market Square 2.0

It's been days since we've been able to get a fresh Starbucks in the square, and we simply cannot wait for the facelift to be completed so we can get back overdosing on caffine.

What exactly is in store? We're not 100% sure, but someone we know with a bit of inside knowledge led us to believe that the changes would include a significant freshening up of the interior with additional seating. However, don't expect more couches, just chairs.

Looks like they have quite the crew working away, and the staff will be back in house on Friday to put the final touches on. Saturday can't come soon enough...I need my Venti bold!

Get Around to the Roundabout Diner!

So we ventured out on our new scooter early this morning (another entry for another day) and made our way to the recently opened Roundabout Diner on the Portsmouth Traffic Circle. The original founders of the Muddy River Smokehouse took over what used to be Bickford's, and wow, what a makeover!

This place is a cool throwback serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with an authentic '50's vibe. The space has been completely renovated and looks fantastic. There is a restaurant area and a longe area (the lounge wasn't open at 6:00 am) and both are spacious and clean. We really liked the black and white checkered floor!!!

The menu boasts local, organic and fresh ingredients. Kobe beef burgers and old Smokehouse favorites look delicious. Homemade pies and "When Pigs Fly Bread" highlight the bakery items. The portions were huge. Real bacon and sausage. Can't wait to try a milkshake at a more appropriate time.

The lounge looks like it would be a good place to catch a game with a couple of large flat-screens, though we suspect this will be most convenient for travelers lodging on the circle. While the website isn't fully functional yet, you can check out the menu at http://www.roundaboutdiner.com.

Tired of those long waits downtown, get to the circle for some jukebox genre tunes and reasonable prices. You won't be disappointed!

Tomorrow is Denim Day in USA...Show Your Support for Victims of Sexual Assault

Tomorrow is the 11th annual Denim Day in LA & USA, as sponsored by Peace Over Violence. In an effort to raise awareness for sexual violence prevention and to demonstrate support for victims of sexual violence, the group has made their annual call for Americans to wear their denim in a show of unity to take place on Wednesday, April 21, 2010.

Since 1999, Denim Day in USA has sought to advocate for the many victims of sexual crimes. The campaign was inspired by the story of a young woman who's assailant was ultimately set free by a judge who decided that because the woman had worn tight jeans on the day of the incident, she must have helped the perpetrator to remove them.

Since we're on the subject of NY retail, check out these limited (by limited, we mean 12 pair) of "Season Openers" from Vans, custom produced for a store in the Bowery district called Dave's Quality Meat. This streetwear shop located on East Third Street is themed after a, well, meat shop. One of the very early inspirations to Fast Eddie's laundromat concept, DQM's focus is more on skate culture and rare footwear. Presentation is everything at this low-key location where the front counter is a butcher's meat case with tees all wrapped up in meat packaging to ensure "freshness."

While Dave's doesn't have the denim influence we do here at Fast Eddie's Dirty Laundry, they have established a standard that we hope to achieve someday!

Giving Props when they're due...

At Fast Eddie's, we have a list of stores that we look to for inspiration. One such place is Self Edge (a play on the denim term selvage), located in NYC and San Fran. Self Edge specializes in raw denim up-and-comers like 3sixteen and Sugar Cane & Co. Certainly, the goods at Self Edge are for those with with an intense passion for breaking in their jeans, but the whole notion of the place is pretty cool. And, while we're not trying to offer the same type of wares, we have a true appreciation for what this store has going on. Check out a recent review from The New York Times at the link below. We'll be popping in on our next buying trip to NYC for sure! Maybe we can round up enough folks here in Portsmouth who would be interested in a raw denim purchase one day...

Not to be missed, FourSquare Day is arriving in Portsmouth this Friday as part of International FourSquare Day. Participants around the world will try to rack up the most points and goodies as they canvas local "check-in" points.

Everyone is familiar with the old school playground game of FourSquare, but in 2010 the contest has taken on a whole new viral meaning, fueled by cellular technology and social networking. Participants travel from site to site, where they "check in" on their mobile devices in order to alert friends of their location and collect special offers in a hi tech version of a scavenger hunt. As players check-in, they collect recognition in the form of badges, earn cool rewards, and can ultimately be named "mayor" of any particular spot by becoming the most frequent visitor.

On Friday, businesses around the Portsmouth area will provide all kinds of incentives to get folks to check-in at as many spots as possible. Take part in this cool new means of local exploration while supporting local business.

Is the denim tuxedo making a comeback?????

Fashion always derives much of its inspiration from social and cultural context...but, has the state of the economy fostered a back-to-basics, roll-up your sleeves work ethic style trend? A debate is brewing as to whether an apparent resurgence in head-to-toe denim styling is acceptable or down right tacky. In all reality, the answer probably depends on where your perspective comes from. I think we all can agree that here in New Hampshire, there are definitely those folks who take it a bit too far, not to mention the tragic abundance of the "jort", or jean short.

Our friends at Pesce Italian Kitchen are one one hell of a roll. After reworking the menu and the space this winter, the rave reviews are streaming in. One of our favorite spots in town is rolling out the patio furniture just in time for spring and a little out door bolognese. Keep it up, Cliffe, and we'll be down for some wine and antipasto soon. So...what is all this selvage stuff anyway? Here's some insight from Evisu...

NO1 SPECIAL No1Special is unsanforized japanese selvage denim woven in Osaka by Kaihara Corps Ltd. Unsanforized denim is the most authentic cloth, as used on the very earliest jeans. It has a slightly hairy surface and the warp and weft yarns are quite loose. When it is first washed, the yarn fibers will contract, making the denim much tighter, and causing the garment to shrink. Another effect will be leg twist or skewing. Skewed legs are a sure sign of true vintage jeans. No1Special is cut in shrink-to-fit blocks, so you should buy your normal size for preshrunk jeans and hot soak them before wearing. We recommend soaking them at one of the many hot springs about 100 km south of Osaka, but if that’s not possible, a warm bathtub soak and an overflowing cup of sake for yourself will suffice.

NO2 No2 denim is identical to No1Special, but sanforized. Woven in Osaka Japan on half-width shuttle looms with signature pink selvage. No2 is a mid-to heavy-weight 13.7 oz denim and has a deep blue tone with a very slight red caste. The sanforization process was invented by Sanford Cluett in 1933 and involves passing the unfinished cloth through heated rubber rollers, causing the fibers to shrink and stretching the fabric into a stable state, which will not alter with washing. Sanforizing also prevents the jeans from skewing (twisting). Lastly, the singeing process takes off the hairy surface: before 1933, all denim was unsanforized (like our No1Special).

NO3 No3 is the original famous Evisu Heritage selvage denim, previously known as D85. No3 denim is woven from unbleached “mother cotton”, and the warp is rope dyed with indigo to an extremely deep blue, almost black tone. Rope dyeing is so-called because the cotton yarn is twisted into a “rope” which is dipped into a vat of indigo before being brought up high to the roof of a dye-house, allowing the unstable indigo compounds to oxidize on the cotton, turning it from a murky brown-green color to the deep intense blue of fine selvage denim. No3 can be recognized by the unusual “rising” sun red and white selvage.

NO4 No4 is another brand-new denim specially developed for Evisu. The denim is woven from open-end yarn, with no slubs where the yarns are knotted together during weaving. Open-end yarn denim has a smoother, flatter surface than ring-spun denim. Like all Evisu Heritage denim, No4 is woven on half-width shuttle looms. Shuttle looms use a singe continuous weft yarn which passes backwards and forwards across the warp threads, making a clean woven selvage, unlike modern projectile looms, which shoot the weft yarns across the warp one by one. No4 denim is woven with a classic redline selvage.

NO13 No13 Left is a close reproduction of the early denim used by Lee from the 1910s onwards. It is a left hand twill cloth, which is identifiable by the diagonal twill lines, which run from top-left to bottom-right. Unlike normal right hand twill denim, which is the opposite, left hand twill denim wears down even softer than its’ right hand equivalent. No13 Left is green caste indigo, and has mismatched selvage: one side is plain white, and the other side has a single warp thread of indigo woven into it, staying true to the specifications of the original Lee version. Lastly, jeans cut from No13Left denim have the leather patch sewn on the left side of the waistband.

It should be no surprise that we are vigilantly following the hottest new show on TV. HBO's How to Make it in America has become the favorite past time of Fast Eddie's Dirty Laundry. We're rooting like crazy for our boys Ben and Cam on their quest to conquer the denim world, plus the show gets us as close to being at home in NYC as we can here in Portsmouth. Ok...so we're not diving right in with some news about the latest new arrival of Red Sox gear from Red Jacket (though the stuff is pretty damn cool). No, we're instead issuing a call to arms to all of our friends to support a local resident in her pursuit of the title of Maxim Magazine's 2010 Hometown Hottie!

Meet Kaitlynn. She's a friend of the store and is a contestant in Maxim's annual search for the hottest hometown girls in the land. Not only is Kaitlynn a great gal, but she's a UNH Wildcat to boot. So, let's all pitch in and vote her to the top of Maxim's list for 2010.

Welcome to fast eddie's dirty laundry basket. We've decided to launch a new blog to keep everyone up to date on the latest happenings at the store, any news related to the products we carry, and just about anything else we feel like posting for the world to enjoy.

We're certain this will, in the very least, be a great little experiment for us and all of our friends to follow. We can promise there will be lots of informative stuff, some fun stuff, and probably some downright useless information for everyone to share in.

We're aiming to keep the news fresh and relevant to our little town. Obviously there will be a lot of talk about clothing, but we'll cover all kinds of topics. We'll do our best to keep everyone up to date on the goings on about Portsmouth, and from the view of the decks at our new location, we are sure there will be some intersting action to cover!
